    What a low Vitamin D (25-Hydroxy) can mean

    Low vitamin D is extremely common and usually has an obvious explanation: limited sun exposure, winter and higher latitudes, darker skin (which needs more sun exposure to make the same amount), consistent sunscreen use, indoor work, and higher body weight, which distributes it into fat tissue. Some digestive conditions and medications reduce absorption. It is a very ordinary finding, and how much to supplement — if at all — is worth asking your doctor, since the right amount varies a lot between people.

    A high vitamin D almost always comes from supplementation rather than sun, since the body regulates what it makes from sunlight. High-dose supplements taken over months are the usual reason, and stacking multiple products containing vitamin D without noticing is common. Because very high levels can raise calcium, your doctor may want to check calcium alongside it.
